Spiritual Direction in the Everyday

sunbeam-2A collection of everyday moments embody spiritual direction…
The sense of the Universe waiting on us.
We are all being waited on…
served…
cared for…
lovingly catered to…
nurtured…
nudged…
fed…
held…
cherished…
attended to…
instructed…

I am waited on by new friends who welcome me to the table, and serve a meal of humus, tabouli, flat bread and seasoned chicken. They put food on my plate and encourage me to take more.
And I am waited on by the Universe.
It’s the same in spiritual direction – welcomed, fed, cared for, generously given all I need.

I drive the car around town to various meetings and appointments and as I turn the corner at Lakeshore Drive, the sky opens and the sun beams down through mountainous clouds to say, “Here is life and all it can be. I am at your disposal. Enjoy!”
And I am waited on by the Universe
It’s the same in spiritual direction – a shift in perspective as the holy appears unannounced.

A two year old child who speaks only Arabic approaches and asks to be picked up with outstretched arms.
And I am waited on by the Universe
It’s the same in spiritual direction – love shared, trust embodied, vulnerability, need and care all wrapped up in a simple gesture or a tearful moment that honours deep longing.

A familiar face is seen and a memory returns from a painful time.
And I am waited on by the Universe
It’s the same in spiritual direction- pain acknowledged, story retold, nudged toward wholeness, forgiveness pops in for a visit, grace abundant holds me as I look at myself without blinders.

Todd comes home and kisses my neck. We dance silly dances to raunchy music and I try to get him to wiggle his hips. We laugh.
And I am waited on by the Universe
It’s the same in spiritual direction -loved and accepted just as I am. I am free to fully be me, to explore and play and move creatively in the world.

Henry, the new puppy, hates his crate. His mouth drips profusely with salvia while he’s in it. He shivers as he whines. I don’t even want to try to understand his angst. I just want it to go away.
And I am waited on by the Universe
It’s the same in spiritual direction- faced with discomfort and pain I am invited to hold others and myself in mercy when fear is all consuming.

These moments of being waited on are all around us.
From the perspective of everyday experience, spiritual direction is how I learn to perceive all the ways I am held and tended by the Universe…
that mystery beyond…
which invites me
into holy love…
and holy beauty.
